The Importance of Family and Sexual Intimacy

I loved the readings this week on sexual intimacy and family life. I loved the quote by President Henry B. Eyring which says, “Just as Jesus used a child in His mortal ministry as an example for the people of the pure love they must and could have to be like Him, He has offered us the family as an example of an ideal setting in which we can learn how to love as He loves. That is because the greatest joys and the greatest sorrows we experience are in family relationships. The joys come from putting the welfare of others above our own. That is what love is.” I loved this quote because it shows us how important the family is or at least should be for each and every one of us. What I got out of this quote when I read it was that family is love. This is why family and sexual intimacy is important.

I know that growing up and even still, I’ve heard many people, both in the church and out of the church, say how dumb our ‘rule’ of not having sex before marriage is stupid. They question how we can know that the person we are marrying is the right one if we aren’t having sex before marriage. I have a lot to say to these people. Number one, it’s not a rule. It’s a commandment God has given us. I also believe that sexual intimacy only with your spouse after marriage is important because they is such a sacred thing that should only be saved for your spouse. If not, it wouldn’t mean as much.

One of my best friends in high school has a mom that is a very popular writer on sex in relationships. Every time I went over to his house, she always had to give us advice. The advice was always something new except 1 thing she says every time that always sticks with me is, “The best thing you can do is save yourself for marriage and the person that matters most to you.” I always thought this was interesting especially coming from someone who literally writes books on sexual intimacy in relationships. To me it shows the importance of sexual intimacy. She is the one that wrote, “And They Were Not Ashamed: Strengthening Marriage Through Sexual Fulfillment.”

I find it interesting that we have, “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.” In this proclamation we learn that the family is the most important unit in the Kingdom of God. We also learn what the family should look like. It’s not surprising that right now, the family is one of the biggest, if not the biggest thing under attack in this world. Satan is very jealous that we have families to love, grow and learn with. He is trying to do everything he can to tear apart and destroy families and he quite honestly has been doing a great job. I feel like more and more we are seeing marriages that aren’t lasting as long, children that are being raised by 1 parent along with parents that just do not care as much about their children.

I’ll forever be grateful for the family I have been blessed with in this life. We are not perfect and no family is but I know that we are doing our best and at the end of the day, we all love each other and would drop anything if someone in our family needed something. I’m grateful for the gospel and my parents that have taught me through commandments, scripture and example the importance of family and sexual intimacy. I have seen both of these things bless so many people’s lives and I’ve see them destroy people for those that don’t take them seriously.
